M. SIMMER The unexpected announcement of the death of M. M. Simmer of this city Sunday morning, cast a shadow of gloom over this community and bro’t sorrow to a happy home. Mr. Simmer died at the city hospital in St. Paul at 4 o’clock a.m. March 15, nearly two days after the amputation of his right leg above the knee. The operation had been reported a success, and his demise was therefore unexpected. Mr. Simmer had not been in good health, and in his weakened condition succumbed to the shock of the operation. Mr. Simmer, while at a photographers’ convention at St. Paul several weeks ago, was troubled with wheat he thought to be a corn between two of the toes of his right foot but did not pay much attention to the sore until the small toe began to swell and pain him considerably. The toe finally turned black and, as it looked like a case of blood poisoning, his friends prevailed upon him last Wednesday to go at once to consult doctors at St. Paul as it was thought amputation of the toe was necessary. Accordingly the late afternoon through train was stopped to accommodate him. he was met in St. Paul by relatives who took him in charge, and after a consultation by doctors it was found that blood poisoning had developed to such an extent that it was necessary to amputate the leg above the knee to save his life. Mr. Simmer consented and the operation was performed at the hospital named, and according to all reports, was successful. However the patient became weaker Saturday night and gradually sank until four o’clock Sunday morning when he expired. Mathias M. Simmer was born and raised in Scott county, near Jordan, and came to this city in 1881 opening a watchmaker shop and photograph gallery, and afterwards branching out in the jewelery business, which he has continued since, with the exception of a few years during which ime he was interested in the milling business in this city. In 1882 he was united in marriage in this city to Miss Marie Hames of Arlington, who together with five children, two sons and three daughters, survive him. Deceased was 51 years, 11 months and 7 days old at the time of his demise. He was a kind and indulgent husband and parent, and had many warm friends in this city who deeply regret his untimely demise. The remains were brought from St. Paul on Monday noon’s train and taken to the family home where they lay in state until Wednesday morning when the funeral was held. The services were conducted at St. Joseph’s Catholic church by Rev. Father Kukelink, who paid a glowing tribute to the memory of the departed. - Henderson Independent.
