Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Dwight Grabitske Arlington Enterprise Thursday 1 August 1912 Mrs. Hannah Slough Dead Burned to Death in Home of Son-in-law, Wm. Rodeck at Deerwood. Mrs. Hannah Slough, relict of the late Wm. Slough of this place, met a sad and tragic fate when the residence of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Rodeck of Deerwood, with whom she has been making her home since she left Arlington, was destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon and she perished in the flames. How the fire started is a mystery, as no one was at home at the time except Mrs. Slough and a small child, which crept from the house a few minutes before it burned. Mr. Rodeck says that he and his son went away to work in the morning, as usual, and that there was no fire in the house after breakfast, as the rest of the family had a cold lunch for dinner. Mrs. Rodeck and one of the children went out to pick berries in the afternoon, leaving the oldest girl with the two youngest children at home with their grandma. The latter took a nap about two o’clock and one of the children also went to sleep. The girl then took the other child in the baby carriage and went down the road. While she was gone the fire broke out and the fatallity occurred. The remains were brought to Arlington Thursday evening and buried in the Lutheran cemetery beside her husband Friday noon. Rev. Eyrich of New Rome officiated and held services in both English and German at the City Hall. Mrs. B. A. Shadlinger of New Auburn sang. Mrs. Hannah Slough, nee Langguth, was born in Germany April 18, 1845, and came to America in 1864. She was married to William Slough in 1866 and ten children were born to them, of whom seven survive, viz: Mrs. Minnie Rodeck, of Deerwood; Thomas, of New Auburn; Henry, of Minneapolis; Chas., of Heron Lake; and George; Mrs. Anna Kohlhoff and Mrs. Emma Sommers of South Dakota. Her husband died five years ago. Deceased was a good wife and mother and a kind neighbor and friend, and although in late years she became infirm and feeble, she was well taken care of by her daughter and family. Her unnatural death, while greatly to be deplored, could not be prevented by mortal hands. She was called by The Maker in His Own way and for His Own good purpose, to rest in peace forever more. The bereaved children have the sympathy of all in their affliction. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
