This community was shocked to hear of the sudden death of one of Green Isle’s foremost citizens, Mr. Jared Spellacy, who expired suddenly at his home in that village Saturday evening shortly after supper. He had not been feeling very well for several days previous and complained of a pain in his chest, but on this particular evening was feeling some better and after eating supper was conversing with his family when he arose from his chair and started to walk but fell forwards on his hands and died instantly. Dr. Schneider and others were immediately summoned, but it was of no avail, he had been called by his Maker, and all that human hands and skill could do was for naught. Deceased was 62 years of age and he had been a resident of the village for the past 28 years. His early life was spent in Texas and he was a resident of Belle Plaine at one time. About 35 years ago he was married to Catherine Martin of St. Peter, who survives him. Eight children were born to them, four girls and four boys, namely: Mrs. Smith, Mathilda, Euphrasia, Ursula, Ibar, Frank, Aloysius and Amseln (who is dead). The funeral took place Tuesday under the auspices of the Independent Order of Foresters of which he was a member, and was largely attended. The relatives from abroad who were present, were his brothers Wm., of Henderson, Mike of Lakeville, John Spellacy and wife and Mr. and Mrs. Erickson of St. Paul; the latter is his sister. Jared Spellacy was a well known figure, and had a large acquaintance throughout the county. For many years he was postmaster of his home town and as the organist of the Green Isle Catholic church sang the first high mass ever sang there. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
