In the interest of authenticity, the maps reprinted were not retouched or altered in anyway. Also, the names in the landowners indexes, are copied exactly as they were printed on the original map by Robert Houghtelin, with no attempt made to correct the spellings. Ronald Houghtelin created and constructed the 1879 Landowners of record from the reprint, (with special help from Sandford (Sandy)Johnson while he was an officer with the Steele County Historical Society in 1988), Sandy showed me where the map was located. I was looking for one of these maps so I could construct this atlas. This wall map now hangs in the railroad depot, in a new glass frame, in the Steele County Village of Yesteryear, at the Steele County fairgrounds in Owatonna, MN. My son Robert Houghtelin went over the township maps one by one and recorded all the landowners from each township, and alphabetized them for the 1879 Landowners Record, as it now exists. Serane Hennes sold advertising for the publication. Historically yours was written and added by Mrs Odell Knutson. For the Steele County Historical Society called Early settlement of county. This is a brief history of the Steele County area before 1854 and before Minnesota became a state. She mentions some of the very early names of the settlers of this county in this article. Information about the Indians living in this area in the earlier times. They were either moved or destroyed. I have no record of them in my 53 cemetery records of Steele County, Minnesota. I will mention the cemeteries that appear to be gone, that are shown on the maps. Berlin Twp section 26 on the Henry Nelson property which is now a part of Ellendale and was probably moved. Clinton Falls Twp section 24 on the John Virtue property. I do not know what happened to this cemetery. Havana Twp section 32 on the Frank Chambers property and the cemetery belonged to the Lutheran Church. I think this Lutheran Church moved to section 33 and moved the cemetery and is now called Aurora Lutheran Church. Ron Houghtelin 2003
