(Also on front page Duluth News-Tribune) (but reduced-length article there) Had Long Civic, Masonic Record L. AYRES, 81, DIES ------- Funeral Is Set for 2 P.M. Monday in Temple ------- Long prominent in Masonic ac- tivities, at the Head of the Lakes and throughout the state, Lyonel Ayres, 81 years old, died in a Du- luth hospital yesterday following an illness of six weeks. Mr. Ayres came to the Head of the Lakes in 1885 and took part in numerous engineering and survey- ing projects in development of the [Photo Inserted] [See Photo at: http://www.usgwarchives.net/mn/stlouis/obits/ayresl.jpg] region. He resided at 15 East Kent road. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Monday in the Lake Ave- nue Masonic temple. Palestine lodge, AF @ AM, will conduct serv- ices. The temple will be open at 1:45 p. m. Born Sept. 4, 1858, in Memphis, Tenn., Mr. Ayres received his early education in Centre county, Penn- sylvania, from a private tutor. His family moved to Philadelphia in 1872 and there he attended public schools, graduating in 1876 from the Philadelphia Central high school. After four years in the insur- ance business he joined his father in the mercantile business. In 1883 he accepted a position with the Great Northern railroad at Glen- dive, Mont., and while employed with the firm saw the development of the frontier. Mr. Ayres came to West Superior in 1885 to take charge of construc- tion of rail yards and passenger station. The same fall he super- vised construction work on the waterfront in Duluth. He accepted the position of as- sistant city engineer for Duluth under City Engineer James Fowler in 1886 and served under six chief engineers, during which time he had charge of construction of the city's sewer system. He supervised construction of a drydock for the American Ship Building Co. in Superior in 1900 and 1901, and in the latter year joined the Duluth Engineering Co. During the next 14 years he di- rected construction of municipal improvements in cities and villages throughout the northern part of the state, as well as supervising general land surveys and platting townsites for the territory. Also during the period he was county surveyor for three consecutive terms. In 1915 he was appointed city engineer by the late Commissioner of Public Works James A. Farrell, serving for four years. About that time he acquired an interest in the Duluth Engineering Co. and was affiliated with that firm ever since then. During his Masonic career, Mr. Ayres held numerous high offices in the order. He was a life mem- ber of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Minnesota Surveyors and Engineers society, the Duluth Engineers club, the Du- luth Chamber of Commerce, the National Geographic society and the American Forestry association. Surviving are two sisters, Mary and Jane Ayres, and a brother, Bucher Ayres, all of Swarthmore, Pa. Active pallbearers at Monday's rites will be Harry G. Gearheart, Stanley R. Holden, James S. Matte- son, Hugh L. Joyce, Henry E. Grieser and Philip M. Hanft. Honorary pallbearers will be C. G. Townsend, A. Laird Goodman, William P. Majo, Philip R. Moore, Calvin F. How, W. R. Cameron, John A. MacFadyen, John E. Law- rence, George R. Reed, Raymond L. Larson, Ray G. Palmer, Walter F. Kelso, J. Alvin Johnson, Axel E. Johnson, Seth W. Paine, George G. Davies, Ellis J. Butchart, Will- iam J.
