Baxter Jr., 72 of Ely, dies James G. Baxter Jr., 72 of Ely, went to be with Jesus on Feb. 27, 2006. A memorial celebration of Jim's life will be Friday, March 3 at Washington Auditorium in Ely at 6 p.m. for visiting, with services at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred, to be sent to the family. Jim was born in the Twin Cities on Nov. 6, 1933 to Rev. James and Helen Baxter. He graduated from St. Cloud State University in the 1950s. In 1992, Jim retired from his teaching career, but continued coaching high school hockey through 2006 for over 50 years of coaching. He was a part of young people's lives at Minnehaha Academy, West, Washburn and Southwest High Schools in Minneapolis and Ely High School in Ely. He moved to Ely in 1995 full time and loved his log cabin on the lake, which he built in the late 1960s. Jim touched many lives everywhere, loved people and went the extra mile to help those who needed him. His greatest desire was to have everyone spend eternity with him and his Savior, Jesus Christ. Survivors include: wife Diane; daughters: Barb (Tim) Cooper of Isabella; Sherri (Terry) Miller of Faribault; Laurie (Joe) Juranitch of St. Louis Park; grandchildren: April and Stephanie Cooper, Michelle & Noah Miller; brother Richard (Carolee) of Mpls; sister: Joan (Ben) Larson of Ely and many nieces, nephews & cousins. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Rev.
