Calvin W. Cherne, 83, of Virginia, dies



  Calvin W. Cherne, 83, of Virginia, died Monday, May 2, 2005, at St. 

Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia.

  He was born on Dec. 4, 1921 in Ely to Michael and Frances (Wenker) 

Cherne and grew up in Ely.

  Calvin was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He married Katherine 

Grahek in Baltimore, MD on July 17, 1943, and they had been Virginia 

residents since 1950.

  He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church of Virginia and 

Crellin-Tini VFW Post 1113 of Virginia. He worked as an iron worker in 

the construction trade and retired from Eveleth Mines in 1983 as a welding 

foreman after many years of service.

  He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Katherine Cherne of Virginia; 

one daughter, Pam (Randy) Bowe of Duluth and one granddaughter, Jessica 

Bowe of Duluth; two brothers, Fred (Grace) Cherne and Stanley Cherne, 

both of Ely; and three sisters, Esther (Owen) Beel of Ely, Lorraine 

Olson of Bishop, CA and Rita (Bob) McLean of Watsonville, CA; and numerous

nieces and nephews.

  He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Helen Riikola 

and Dorothy Pietila; and three brothers, Dennis Cherne, Leslie Cherne 

and Jesse Cherne.

  A memorial service was held on Friday, May 6 at St. Michael’s Catholic 

Church in Duluth with the Rev. Fr. William Fider as celebrant.
