Hanka, 82, of Embarrass dies Elizabeth A. Hanka, 82, of Embarrass died Tuesday, April 12, 2005, at the Grandview Christian Nursing Home in Cambridge. She was born Dec. 14, 1922, to Joseph and Catherine (Hozian) Kaletz in Chicago, IL, where she grew up and attended Catholic school. Upon finishing high school she worked in a brush factory in Chicago. She married Levi A. Hanka on Nov. 11, 1943, in Chicago. Levi served in the Army during World War II with the 247th Combat Engineers on the Normandy landing in France, and in Belgium. Following the war, he returned to Chicago. After the birth of their first child in 1946, the couple moved to Virginia in 1947. In 1959 they made the move to Embarrass. She and Levi owned and operated the Hanka Manufacturing Co., manufacturing sauna stoves and engine block heaters. She was Levi’s partner and helpmate for 56 years of marriage. In 2001 Elizabeth moved to the Anoka/Andover area. Elizabeth was a busy lady all her life, taking care of her family. She enjoyed embroidery, working crosswords, bingo, playing Yahtzee with Levi and at 6 a.m. every morning working in the yard cleaning up. Survivors include her son, Steve (Holly) Hanka, of Minneapolis; two daughters, Carol Harju of Andover and Roxanne (Stan) Reed of Virginia; seven grandchildren, Theresa (Robert) Holmes of Liberty, MO, Denise (Tony) Heckenlaible of East Bethel, Laura (Kevin) Lamson of Oak Grove, Dana Reed and Kate Fuller of Minneapolis, Sara Reed of Minneapolis, Katie Reed of Virginia and Allison Hanka of Minneapolis; four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann, Catherine and Brian Holmes and Erik Reed; one granddaughter and three great-grandchildren expected in July, August and September; a sister, Rose (John) Schenck, of Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Levi, in August 2000; siblings, Katie Kaletz, Ann Rizzo, Mary Kramer and Steve Kaletz; and a niece, Mary Kummer. Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 16 in Tower, with the Rev. Rudolph Pakiz as celebrant. Burial was in the Embarrass Cemetery.
