Hoppa, 89, of Eveleth dies Edward L. Hoppa, 89, of Eveleth died Tues., Jan. 25, 2005 at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Silver Bay after a brief illness. He had resided there since June 2,2003. He was born on Feb. 6, 1915 to Edward J. and Emma (Klobuchar) Hoppa in Kugler Township, MN. He grew up attended schools in Ely. He was a champion ski-jumper and a great figure skater. Edward was an Army v eteran of WWII, serving in the Aleutian Islands until his honorable discharge in 1945. He resided in Seattle, WA for a short time, returning to the Ely area in 1946. He located in Two Harbors for several years, where he was a locomotive engineer for the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Railway. He married Mary Sterle of Eveleth, built a home and resided there for many years. He retired from the railroad in 1975. Most of his retirement years were spent at his cabin on Whiteface Reservior. He is survived by a sister, Eileen Elfving of Silver Bay, MN.; three nephews, Rusty, Ronald and Tim; four nieces, Charlotte, Jamie, Toni and Sandra; nine cousins and many old friends, plus his companion of 17 years, his dog Snooky who will truly miss his master. Also surviving is Bernard Zupancich, niece Sandra's husband, who has been so kind and spent so very much time assisting Ed and his sister through his last three or four years of his life. It was very much appreciated. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary and sisters, Mary, Helen, Virginia, Lorraine and Dolly. Funeral services for family and friends will be held at a later date.
