Hannah Mosnik Johnson, 101, dies

Hannah Mosnik Johnson, 101, formerly of Gateway Tower and Babbitt, MN, 
died on January 15, 2005 at Bayshore Health Center. She was born on 
September 8, 1903 in Elyand was a resident of the Ely-Babbitt area until 
moving to Duluth in 1993.

After graduating from Ely Memorial High School, Hannah worked as a 
secretary-teller for the First National Bank in Ely. She married Andy 
Johnson in April, 1927. They built a house near Babbitt and lived there 
until Andy's death in August, 1993. They were married for 66 years. After 
Andy's death, Hannah moved to Duluth to be near her daughter.

In her younger years, Hannah was an active participant in community 
affairs. She was a member of the local Democrat Farmer Labor party, 
serving as secretary and was a delegate to a number of DFL conventions. 
She was a member of the local Civilian Defense Board during the war years 
of the early 1940s, and a leader of a 4-H troop when her children were 
young. Throughout her life she was involved with groups working in behalf 
of peace and social justice - issues which were very important to her.

She was known as "Blueberry Grandma" to her grandchildren because of the 
blueberry pies that would be awaiting them when they visited, as well as 
the trips along the "Bunny Trail" to pick wild blueberries in the summer.

She was preceded in death by her husband Andy and a son, Albert "Bud" 
Johnson who died in 1964. She was also preceded in death by her parents, 
Frank and Johanna (Koprivitz) Mosnik; her sisters, Mary Slabodnik, Elcey 
Veranth, Frances Saari and Angela Johnson; and her brothers, Frank 
Mosnik, Jr., John Mosnik and Joseph Mosnik.

She is survived by a daughter, Joan Berglund and son-in -law Daniel 
Berglund of Gordon, WI; six grandchildren, Linda Larson (Louis) Rios, 
Decatur, TX; Mark (Christy) Montour-Larson, Wheat Ridge, CO; Debra Lerman 
(Jim Sebanc), Hinsdale, IL; Pamela (George) Watters, Coeur D Alene, ID; 
Sandra (Bill) Murphy, Vallejo, CA; Cynthia (Steve) Bennett, Las Cruces, 
NM; step grand-child, Daniel (Katie) Berglund, Maplewood, MN; a number of 
great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Elisabeth Johnson, Las Cruces, NM; 
and numerous nieces and nephews, including special nieces Alice Murphy, 
Babbitt, and Judy Swenson, Ely.

Hannah possessed a great deal of practical, down to earth wisdom gained 
through a long lifetime of varied and challenging experiences. She faced 
those challenges with courage and strength and was an inspiration to her 
family. She will be remembered for her honesty, warmth and her caring 
concern for her family and friends. She was loved by so many who knew her 
and will be greatly missed.

The family would like to express their appreciation to those special 
staff members at Bayshore Health Center who became her friends and gave 
her their love, support and understanding care over the past four years. 
Special thanks to her great- niece, Sonja, who helped so much in Hannah's 
last months.

In accordance with Hannah's wishes she will be cremated and there will be 
no services. A private family remembrance of her life will be scheduled 
at a later date and her ashes will be placed in Babbitt next to those of 
her husband beneath the pine trees on the land they loved so much.
