Kingston, 54, of Ely died Wednesday, June 9, 2004 at his home. John was born September 26, 1949 in Austin, MN to Clayton and Mary (Kraemer) Kingston. After graduation from Austin High School he obtained his BS Degree from Iowa State University, his Masters Degree from the University of Delaware and PHD from Bowling Green State University. His entire educational and professional careers were spent in studying and improving the environment. John married Sarah Rayman on December 11, 1976 in Austin, MN. John is recognized worldwide for his expertise in Diatom Taxonomy. He has held research positions with the University of Minnesota and Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. He was water quality manager for the Province of Newfoundland, Labrador and USGS National Quality Laboratory in Denver. John was the Ely Field Station administrator for the University of Minnesota-Duluth Natural Resources Research Institute. He balanced his acadamia with applied technology very well by helping many local lake associations with their studies. John is survived by his wife, Sarah; mother: Mary Kingston of Union, WA; children: O’Neill and Hudson Kingston of Ely; brother: William (Lynn) Kingston of Longmont, CO; sisters: Kathy (Tom) Gordy of Evergreen, CO and Nancy (Paul) Wicks of Sumner, WA and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Clayton; father and mother-in-law: Fritz and Jackie Rayman. Funeral Services will be at the Ely United Methodist Church on Monday, June 14, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. Pastor Dana Thompson will officiate. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society. Family services provided by Kerntz Brothers, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Ely.
