Oelrich, 83, of Babbitt, dies Leigh M. Oelrich, 83, of Babbitt, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, as a result of an automobile accident in Virginia. He was born June 11, 1921, in St. Cloud, MN to George and Hazel (Orren) Oelrich, and was raised in Guthrie, MN and attended school in Bemidji. Leigh was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a longtime Ely and Babbitt area resident and had been an electric shovel operator for Reserve Mining Co. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Babbitt; one son, Curt Oelrich of Pinehurst, ID; three daughters, Sharon (Steve) Bateman of Escanaba, MI, Doreen Flynn of Ely, and Tammy (John) Schubert of Wallace, ID; six grandchildren, Jeremy Bateman, Chris Bateman, Jennifer (Jesse) Brunner, Shannon Schubert, Eric Schubert, and Rachel Schubert; one brother, Bob (Marlene) Oelrich of Hoyt Lakes; one sister, Donna Sheppard of Duluth; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
