Saarela, 75, of Virginia died Thursday, October 14, 2004 at his home. He was born on April 3, 1929, in Pike Township to Daniel and Helia (Kopponen) Saarela and grew up there. He attended Pike School 14 and the Embarrass High School. Roy worked for Seppi Brothers Concrete Company from 1952 until 1990. He married Lois Marie Leppala on October 23, 1959. They had been Virginia residents since 1972. Roy was a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church and Teamsters Local 346 of Virginia, and was a former member of Virginia Moose Lodge 1117. Survivors include his wife, Lois of Virginia; one son, Roy Michael (Jan) Saarela of Burnsville, MN; three daughters, Laureen (Seppo) Mahonen of Virginia, Lynn Hedman of Virginia and LuAnn (Tom) Wingard of Elk River, MN; five grandchildren, Matthew and Andrew Mahonen of Virginia, Mark (Karen) Wingard of Elk River, Melissa (fiance Zach Fossum) Wingard of Elk River and David Wingard of Elk River; one great-grandson, Ryan Thomas Wingard; three brothers, Albert (Pauline) Saarela of Butte, MT, Robert (Jean) Saarela of Seattle, WA, and Daniel (Marlene) Saarela of Biwabik; one sister, Helen Sambum of Chisholm; and one sister-in-law, Alice Saarela of Proctor. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Florence Nelson and Lillia King; and one brother, Richard Saarela.
