FileFormat by Terri--MNArchives Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Ely Echo [www.elyecho.com] Submitted: November 2004 ========================================================================= Delmer (Del) Carl Tjaden, 85, of Babbitt, dies Delmer (Del) Carl Tjaden, 85, of Babbitt, MN passed away Thursday, Oct. 14 at St. Mary's Duluth Hospital. Del and his family were long time residents of Des Moines, IA. He was employed at Armstrong Tire & Rubber until his retirement when he moved to Babbitt, MN in 1975. Del was born April 18, 1919 in Rockwell City, IA to Robert & Helena Tjaden. He graduated from Manson High School. Del joined the U.S. Army Aircorp shortly after Peal Harbor and spent 4 years in the China-India-Burma Theatrae as crew chief in the 490th Bomb Squadron Serving our country during WWII. Had many interesting stories to tell his children about his time in the service. After his discharge from the Army, he met Helen Ione Rabbitt and they were married at Bethlehem Luth-eran Church in Ft Dodge, Iowa on October 16, 1947. They raised their four children in Des Moines, Iowa. Del had a love for music his entire life, singing and playing the Ukulele with his family. He was a loving father, enjoying time with his kids whenever possible. He also loved golf and fishing which is one of the things that took him to Babbitt. Del was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and four brothers. He leaves behind his wife, Helen, of 57 years, his four children: Steven (Nancy) Tjaden of Anchorage, AK, Tom (Kris) Tjaden of Gunnison, CO, Pam (Brian) Nichols of Walla Walla, WA and Curt Tjaden of Everett, WA. He had five grandchildren: Jennifer Emily, Brian Michael, Jamie Kathleen, Molly Kay and Tony Curtis. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
