Albert Woolson, last Union Army Veteran of the Civil War, died today and the Grand Army of the Republic died with him. He was 109. The old drummer boy, who was "scared to death" the first time he fired a canon, outlived some 2,675,000 of the Boys in blue. Woolson died in St. Luke's Hospital where he had been confined several times recently because of lung congestion. Doctors said the congestion was brought on chiefly because of his advanced age. He lapsed into a coma early Saturday. Since then he had been fed intravenously and had been given oxygen. The old soldier showed markable stamina in recovering from his previous illnesses. Dr. Charles Bagley, his physician, said after Woolson showed good improvement in June that his "deep-seated interest and drive" kept him going. Hospitalized in May, Woolson spent Memorial Day at his Duluth home then returned to St. Luke's the following day. He had been confined since. ===== From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Albert Henry Woolson Born February 11, 1850 Antwerp, New York, U.S. Died August 2, 1956 (aged 106) Duluth, Minnesota, U.S. Buried: Park Hill Cemetery, Duluth, Minnesota Rank: Drummer boy Unit: 1st Minnesota Heavy Artillery Regiment Battles/wars: American Civil War Memorials Monument at Gettysburg Albert Henry Woolson was the last known surviving member of the Union Army who served in the American Civil War; he was also the last surviving Civil War veteran on either side whose status is undisputed.
