He had dressed himself in his best apparel with clean linen, and had apparently prepared himself as a guest for the chamber of death. The first intimation of the suicide was given by Ulbrick himself, for he had previously told his neighbor, John Shroeder, that if he should see a white cloth hanging from his window, he might come there and see what the matter was. On this occasion, the signal was displayed, and Schroeder seeing it, went to the house and there discovered the victim in the condition hitherto described, when Schroeder immediately gave the alarm. Nathan Ulbrick was a native of Germ, Bohemia, aged between 45 and 50 years, and an unmarried man. He came to Duluth about four years ago, having previously lived at Anoka and Minneapolis for a number of years, and was exceedingly temperate and abstermous in his habits, with a frugality bordering on miserly tendencies. While residing in Duluth, he had no particular employ- ment, but devoted his time chiefly upon the little home which he had made on Piedmont Avenue. He was exceedingly retiring in his habits, and reticent in his manner, with but few associates, and he almost lived as a hermit within his own enclosures. His misanthropy was noticeable to all who knew him, and his mind preyed on the hallucination that he was not liked, and hence he had a dread of commingling with his neighbors; and among other freaks of dethroned mind, he obtained a certificate from a physician as to the cause of slight sickness which he had had, to show any doubting person that his ailing was not of the character he imagined that the community might suppose it to be. At another time, speaking with an acquaintance, he asked him if he thought it would be worse for him to kill himself than to kill another man--for he feared that if his enemies became too strong for him, he would have to do one or the other thing. The Coroner held an inquest upon the body on the afternoon of his death, and their verdict was as follows; "Death, caused by the firing of a pistol from his own hand." Upon the table and near the body was found the following note, without date or signature, but written in German with a firm and composed hand, apparently with a calmness that indicated a stoicism equalling the deliberate precision of a Socrates, as he dictated the reasons for his going off. He wrote: "I am tired of life. Do not want to live any longer among this bad people. The ball, which I gave to myself, ought by right, belong to some of my neighbors but I do not want to die as a criminal, so I die for my enemies." Among his papers was found the following, written to Mr. Geo Berkelmann: MR. BERKELMAN Pray, let two holy masses be read in the Catholic church for my deceased parents, and pay with my money. NATHAN ULBRICK Mr. Berkelmann, knowing that he had been appointed executor in a will made by Ulbrick a year ago, and from the authority conveyed by the above note, with the advice of the Judge of Probate, took charge of the effects and body of the deceased, and Tuesday gave the remains of Ulbrick a respectable burial, in accordance with the wish expressed in the will. On Wednesday, Mr. Berkelmann presented the will to the Probate Court for probate. We were permitted to copy the same and her insert it, because of the singularity of the behests.
