The first schoolhouse in the village was a one room wooden structure which stood on the site of the present county garage. Students were taught to read from the famous McGuffey Readers. As a common district the school was under the supervision of the Swift County Superintendent of Schools. Later the building was moved to the main street and through the years used as a telephone office, post office and cafe. In June 1986 it was destroyed by fire. About 1900 a four room school building was erected in the northwestern part of town. There were three grades, primary, first and second; third, fourth and fifth; sixth, seventh and eighth, in three of the rooms and the first two years of high school in the fourth room. Each room had one teacher. The children of the district who lived on farms walked to school and carried their lunches. In 1919 construction was begun on a larger modern brick building. It was located directly north of the wooden building. During recess periods the schoolchildren enjoyed watching the workmen, especially and bricklayers. This building was ready for occupancy in the fall of 1920. This new building was occupied by the elementary school (grades one through eight) and a four year high school. The district became Independent District No. 5, Swift County. The school now had its own superintendent. The first superintendent was Halvor Graven. He not only acted as the superintendent but he also taught many of the high school classes. In 1921 there was one member in the graduating class; in 1922 and 1923 there were two members; and in 1924 three students were graduated. This was the first class that had started its high school work in the new Holloway high school. The surrounding rural schools did not consolidate with the Holloway district but their students were admitted on a tuition basis. At first these students drove to school or lived in homes in town. In 1930 bus service was begun and the country students were brought by bus to the school. As the high school enrollment grew, more teachers, more courses, and more activities were added. Among the activities were sports, declamation, band, and a school newspaper. A hot lunch program was also added. Soon after the completion of the building, Mr. Otto Latzke, who was then a member of the school board, purchased and planted trees on all side of the school yard. The first lawn was landscaped and large playground areas were provided to the north and south of the building. Throughout the years the building, lawn, trees and playgrounds were always well kept and everyone in the community was proud of the school. In 1961 the Holloway School District was consolidated with the Appleton District No. 784. Since then the children have been taken by bus to Appleton.
