C. Kaufman, 89, one of Minnesota's oldest practicing physicians, died Saturday at the Montevideo hospital where he had been admitted the previous Wednesday. On Sept. 1 of this year Dr. Will would have completed 60 years of service to this community as physician and surgeon, having arrived here Sept. 1, 1911 after receiving his degree in medicine at Creighton University at Omaha, Neb. William Carl Kaufman was born on Dec. 28, 1882 on a farm near Mapleton, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Kaufman, and one of a family of two sons and four daughters. The family moved to Blue Earth when he was five. He attended rural school there and remained on the farm until he was 16 years of age. He never attended a regular high school but made up the equivalent of four years of high school in Sioux City, Ia., while employed at other jobs during the day. He took his first year medical course at Sioux City, Ia., his second year at Vermillion, S.D., and finished at Creighton. He opened a hospital in what was the "Brown's Hotel" here in March, 1916, a new construction, Kaufman Hospital, was opened on Christmas day, 1918. He continued his practice there and in the downtown office and at the Appleton Municipal hospital since its completion in 1952. He had been mayor of the village several years, a member of the board of education for 11 years, president of the Swift-Kandiyohi Medical Society and the Camp Relief Medical association. Dr. Will was a member of the American Medical Association, a surgeon for both the Milwaukee and Great Northern railways, a member of the Masonic and Oddfellows Lodges in Appleton and the Zuhrah Temple Shrine in Minneapolis, and a charter member of the Appleton Golf Club. He maintained his interest in horses and received many awards over the years with entries in harness races in Minnesota, adjoining states and Canada. He was married to Octavia Weisbrod, of Milwaukee, Wis., on Oct. 20, 1921. Two children were born to this union, Dr. Wm. C. Kaufman II, of Green Bay, Wis. and Mrs. Bruce (Gail) Clark, of Broomfield, Colo. They survive as well as six grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. H. E. Wilson, of Blue Earth, and a foster daughter, Mrs. H. S. (Dorothy) Rykken, of Williston., N. D. Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were one brother, Andrew J. Kaufman and sisters, Mrs. Henry (Anna) Doege, Mrs. Joseph (Ella) Fenske and Mrs. John (Sarah) Randecker, also a half-sister, Emma Leeb. Funeral services were held at Trinity Lutheran church on Tuesday with Rev. Lyle Rusert, officiant. Pallbearers were Dr. Wm. A. Owens, Dr. N. L. Hagberg, Dr. Robert Miller, Dr. David Miller, Dr. E. J. Kaufman and Dr. J. A. Rorem. Interment took place in the Appleton cemetery.
