The accident occurred at the farm of Lester Kerr last Tuesday afternoon about four o'clock, and Mr. Kohler died on Wednesday, August 15, at 11:15 a. m. Mr. Kohler was driving a grain wagon in the threshing operations of the Kerr farm. He stopped the team close to the gasoline engine used to operate the separator, and got off the load to start the engine. When the engine started, the noise frightened the team. Thomas Timm, a young son of Mr. and Mrs. Curt Timm was on the grain wagon, and it is thought that Mr. Kohler feared for the safety of the boy and made an attempt to reach the wagon and stop the horses. In the attempt he slipped under the wheels and they passed over his abdomen. Doctors were summoned immediately but despite every effort to aid him in his fight for life death took him the following day. The little boy remained on the wagon and the team ran until they struck a tree, when the impact covered him with grain. He was immediately rescued from his dangerous position and suffered but a few bruises from the experience. Gustav J. Kohler was born on the farm in the township of Moyer that was his home at the time of his death, on February 23, 1883. He was married to Martha Ritzke of Shible township on Feb. 2, 1905. His wife and two children, Helen and Otto, survive. Two sisters, Mrs. R. Janke of Moyer and Mrs. Gust Lenz of Montevideo, also survive. Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday at 11 o'clock a. m. from the Evangelical church, Fairfield, Rev. F. R. Reidal officiating. This is the second fatal accident in the Kohler family. A son met death by drowing in the mill pond here about eight years ago.
