The McGuire home in the town of Hegbert was the scene of a terrible tragedy that last wed evening about 8 o'clock when Miss Goldie Cale, teacher of that district, was shot and instantly killed by John McGuire, who afterwards took his own life by hanging. Stories of the details are confliction but it is reported that after words passed between the two, the girl started for a neighbor. McGuire for the time being apparently having lost his reason, started after her with a shotgun. He fired two shots; both taking effect and the girl fell dead. Mr. McGuire then bridled a horse and started for Benson with the evident intention of giving himself up. When he got to the Bridge across the Pomme de Terre River about three miles from the house he got off his horse and tied it to a tree with a check line. He then took the halter, tied it to the railing and hanged himself. His body was afterwards found hanging from the bridge. The hired hand of the farm raised the alarm and Joseph Arnold one of the neighbors notified Sheriff Doyle about 11 o'clock. That officer and coroner Minikus at once drove out there in an auto. After making an investigation, a coroner's inquest was not deemed necessary. The remains of McGuire were removed to the home and those of Miss. Cale were brought to Benson to be embalmed. They will be taken to Willmar, the Lady's home, by her father today. Mr. Cale came up from Willmar Wednesday night to take care of the remains. John McGuire who was about 48 years of age was the oldest son of the late James McGuire. Since his fathers death he has taken charge of the farm for his mother. He was one of the most prominent farmers in that part of Swift County and had always had a very high reputation. The only explanation for the unaccountable act is that he had become temporarily insane. Miss. Cale whose home is in Willmar, was 22 years of age. She had been a teacher for four years and was engaged last fall to take charge of the school in the McGuire district. She boarded at the McGuire home. The tragedy is a terrible one and shock to the grief stricken members of both families cannot be expressed in words. The heartfelt sympathy of the whole community goes out to them in this sad hour of trial. The funeral services of John McGuire are expected to be held from home tomorrow.
