Bertha Koehler Wendland was born July 29, 1884, in Fairfield, Minnesota of Frank and Minna Koehler. She became a Christian at an early age, joining the Evangelical church. On April 24, 1902, she was united in holy matrimony to Gustav A. Wendland, who preceded her in death on May 7, 1938. Mrs. Wendland is survived by her two children, Reuben E. of Minneapolis and Florence Wendland Ness of Washington, D. C., four sisters, Mrs. Ed Roske and Mrs. Ed Fellman of Bellingham and Mrs. Lena Milbrandt and Mrs. Lydia Milbrandt of Montevideo, plus numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Wendland lived a selfless life, devoted to her children and sisters. She lived a life of service in her church, also being a contributing member of the Ladies Aid. This, however, was not all she gave. Her valued contribution to the community came in the service to children. For many years she cooked meals for the children of the Bellingham school. This resulted in an over-taxed heart with a heart attack bringing to a close the labor of love she so much enjoyed. Her great pleasure to even this past Christmas season were the greetings she received in the mail from scores of children she had served. Funeral services were held in the Evangelical United Brethren church on Tuesday at 2:00 p. m. with interment at the Bellingham cemetery with Rev. C. W. Moore officiating. She lay in state in the church from 10:30. The pallbearers were nephews, John Bombeck, George Wendland, Bert and Fred Milbrandt, Robert Koehler and Richard Steffen.
