Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: Nancy Colombo This from Gerrie Tierney Boland: In the Plainview Herald I took down the date of 11/11/1882 there was an article on the death of John Harland - this is off by a year of the death date we have. John Harland, one of the most prominent citizens and oldest inhabitants of the town of Oakwood, died very suddenly last Saturday morning about eleven o'clock. It seems that early in the morning he greatly overheated himself running after cattle and came to his house exhausted. He sat down by the stove, and his wife, somewhat worried by his alarming condition, stepped out to call their boy, and when she re-entered the house found the old gentleman dead in his chair. Mr. Harland had been Justice of the Peace in Oakwood for a number of years, and has always enjoyed the implicit confidence of the entire community in which he lived. He was one of those few men of whom it can be truthfully said that his word was as good as his bond. His difficulty was heart disease.
