Born August 31, 1917 in Lake City, he was the son of Nicholas and Alice (Esping) Halpaus. He attended school in Lake City and married Helen Knutson September 30, 1938. Joining the U.S. Army in 1945, he was discharged in 1946 and returned to Lake City. An employee of Jewell Nursery and a policeman for Lake City, he was also chief of police in Wykoff, Minnesota. He worked for Waters Corporation in Rochester and retired in 1978 and moved to Red Wing. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Barbara (Mrs. Charles) Hauer of Red Wing and Marie (Mrs. Robert Sr.) Broze of Goodhue; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; three brothers, Harvey of Prescott, Wisconsin, Harlan of St. Paul, Minnesota and Donald of Brandenton, Florida; two sisters, Hazel Pawlowski of Brandenton and Harriet Frank of Big Lake, Minnesota; nieces and nephews. One great grandchild preceded him in death. Funeral services were held March 23 at Anderson-Peterson-Mahn Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Delk officiating. Burial was in Lakewood Cemetery.
