He was born in Brande, Germany, December 16, 1849, where he spent his childhood and early youth. During the Franco-Prussian War he took part in many battles as an artilleryman, being present at the siege of Paris and the triumphant entry of the Prussian forces into that city at the close of the war. Came here in 1873. In 1873 he emigrated to America, coming directly to West Albany. February 19, 1878 he was married to Miss Mary Woiwode at Benedict, in Scott Township, Mr. and Mrs. Laqua establishing their first home on a farm in Gillford Township. Here they resided until 1922 when they moved to Lake City. A pioneer resident, soldier and worthy citizen, Mr. Laqua's death brings to a close a life that was full and true. A member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church at West Albany for many years and for the past nine years of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake City, he took an active interest in the affairs of his church and practiced at all times the Christianity it taught. Many survive. Although more than four score years of age, he remained physically and mentally active until his death asking only that he might do his share of the daily tasks of life. A genial and kindly man, a good father and husband, his departure will be mourned by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Laqua; ten children, William, Herman, Mrs. Frank Leonard and Mrs. Joseph Krismer, all of Gillford Township; Mrs. Ed Sexton, Oakwood; Mrs. Adolph Lichtblau and Mrs. C. J. Laqua of Mount Pleasant; Lucy and Hedwig Laqua at home; Mrs. Patrick Cronin of Lake City; and one brother, Joseph Laqua of Minot, North Dakota. A large number of grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive. Two sons, Richard and Martin, preceded him in death. Funeral services for Mr. Laqua will be conducted at 9 am Saturday from the St. Mary's Catholic Church, Father E. J. Lavery officiating. Burial will be made at the St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in West Albany. Note: This obituary was taken from the newspaper "The Lake City Graphic".
