Julius was a member of the graduating class of the Madelia High School of 1894. While it had been realized for sometime that the dread disease had fastened itself on him his death came as a shock to everyone and it seemed hard to realize that he was gone. Julius was a young man of much promise and by his cheerful disposition and honesty of purpose he endeared himself to all with whom he came in contact. The death of a promising young man is a loss to any community and the sympathy of the entire community goes out to his bereaved parents and relatives. The funeral will take place tomorrow. A short service will be conducted at the West Lutheran church at 9 o'clock in the morning and from there the remains will be taken to the farm in Rosendale where the regular services will be held, he will be interred in the Rosendale cemetery. (MADELIA TIMES-MESSENGER, Madelia, Watonwan County, Minnesota, May 17, 1901, Page 1) 17 May 1901---In Days of Youth. Julius Ulvestad died on Wednesday morning at four o'clock. Consumption was the cause of his death and dates from Jan. 2nd when he was taken sick with the grippe. It seems a cruel fate for a young man, bright and with bright prospects for a business career just opening should be smitten, to wither and perish in sight of his best years. And this thought is uttered rather in the spirit of sadness and rightful disappointment rather than in a spirit of rebellion against the workings of a providence whose decrees emanate from a wisdom which transcends mortal philosophy. Julius Christian Ulvestad was born in Rosendale township, this county, Oct. 18, 1872, and his boyhood days were spent on the farm. After completing the course of study furnished by the district school, he entered the Madelia high school and was graduated from that in the class of 94. Being of a mechanical turn of mind he worked in machine shops for a time and in 1896 spent a year at the University of Minnesota in the engineering department. He then associated himself with his brother and started the firm of Ulvestad Bros., machinists. The business prospered and last year P. N. Haycraft entered the firm and the business was transferred to the Syndicate block, which they built. In the success and growth of the business the personality of Julius Ulvestad has been a strong factor. The funeral will consist of a short service at the West Lutheran church at nine o'clock, Saturday, after which the remains will be transferred to the old Rosendale home where the funeral proper will be held at noon. The burial will be at the Rosendale cemetery. (THE MADELIA TIMES, Madelia, Watonwan County, Minnesota, May 17, 1901, Page 4, Column 2)
