Currie, one of the pioneer settlers of Minnesota, died at her home in Arendahl, this county, last Wednesday afternoon after a brief illness. She has not been in robust health for several years but her condition was not considered critical and the announcement of her death was a great surprise to her numerous friends in this city, where she was a charter member in the order of the Eastern Star and a frequent guest at the home of her sister, Mrs. L. L. Streator. Deceased, whose maiden name was Esther A. Erwin, was born at Lisbon, St. Lawrence county, N. Y., July 31, 1843 and came with her people to Fremont, Winona county, Minnesota, in 1857. Five years later on the 29th of May, 1862, she was united in marriage with John Currie, who brought his young bride to his home in Arendahl, where ten years later she was left a widow with the care of five small children. The children, four sons and one daughter, John, Lizzie, Neil, Henry and Addison, with the exception of Neil, who resides at La Crosse, continue to reside on the old homestead and were at home when their mother passed away. With the exception of two years spent in Minneapolis, she has made the old homestead her home continuously since 1862. Besides her children she is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Augustus A. Erwin, St. Charles; John B., and Addison R. Erwin, Spooner, Wis., and Mrs. Sophronia Streator of this city; all were present at the funeral except John. Daniel Currie of Ramona, S.D., brother-in-law of the deceased, was also in attendance. Mrs. Currie through her long and useful life enjoyed the esteem and confidence of her friends and neighbors. She was a consistent Christian and a member of the Fremont Presbyterian church at which place the funeral took place Saturday, Rev, Geo. Stapley of this city conducting the service, and her mortal remains were laid at rest beside those of her husband who was called away in the Spring-time of life. Rushford Star Republican, 11 February 1909, P. 4 Note: Esther Erwin Currie and her husband John are buried in the Scotch Greenwood Cemetery, Fremont, Winona County, MN. Date of Death: 3 February 1909.
