Cadwell is the oldest living settler in Wright county, having been one of the very first to settle within its present boundaries. He was born in Madison county New York, March 26, 1828. When he was six years of age the family moved to Calhoun county, Michigan, where he received a good common school education. In 1850 he moved to Racine county, Wisconsin, and there farmed for two years. In August, 1852, he came to Minnesota. Reaching the present site of Monticello by boat, he staked out a claim about two miles above the northern limits of the present city, opposite to Rawlins Island. He built a log cabin,
