He was brought to Minnesota as a boy, and experienced all the rigors of pioneer life. He helped clear the land, and worked hard to help the family get a start in the world. His educational opportunities were limited, but by much reading and deep thinking, coupled with sound sense, he has acquired considerable learning, and his opinions on all subjects are highly valued. At the age of fifteen he started to earn money to help out with the household expenses. He remained at home until twenty-eight years of age.
