The land was originally purchased from the St. Paul/Pacific Railroad in 1869 by James Davis. The Methodist Episcopal Church purchased a 99 year lease on the property from Mr. Davis in 1878. An existing log building doubled as both the church and school house for the area, and the cemetery was created in 1891. The church later moved to South Haven, making the cemetery part of the Free Methodist Church of South Haven, one of the earliest churches in the area. Services were held by a prairie circuit rider who covered churches in the region on a rotational basis. The Free Methodist Church of South Haven later evolved into two churches, Grace Methodist Church and the Zion Evangelical Church of South Haven. Neither of these exists today. Union Cemetery is maintained by Brian Partridge whose grandparents originally owned the land directly east of the cemetery.
