Learned, passed away on Feb. 28th at the age of 94 years, 5 months, and 8 days. His recollections of pioneer days, told with so much color and accuracy, will live on as a tradition in the hearts and minds of those who knew him best. In his retirement the past few years he had kept busy in his garden, and maintained his interests in public affairs by reading and through the radio. Services were conducted Tuesday, March 2nd at 2p.m. from the Presbyterian Church at Waverly, with Rev. C.B. Cedar officiating, attended by Rev. Richard Roberts of Kerkovan. Mr Schweitzer sang "The Holy City" and Rev. and Mrs. Cedar fulfilled the deceased request for "On Christ The Solid Rock I Stand" accompanied by Mrs. Roholt on the organ. Interment was in the family lot at Howard Lake. Rev. Cedar and Rev. Elkin of Minneapolis, gave prayers. Masonic rights were conducted by Dr. A.H. Lee of Howard Lake, assisted by members of Howard Lake No. 134. Pallbearers were Roy Kreitlow, H.E. Gilmer, Herbert Skjob, Neil Campbell, Clinton Cluster and Ernest Arritt, officers of Howard Lake 82, A.F & A.M. Of his family his wife and five children preceded him in death. The survivors are Adelaide (Mrs. Archie Cruzen) of Tustin, CA, A.E. Learned of Buffalo, Harry of Easby, North Dakota, Susan (Mrs. Bert Haag) of Minneapolis, Kate Learned of Waverly, Ruth (Mrs. James Graham) of Howard Lake, two sisters Mrs Estella Issac of Long Beach, CA. and Mrs. Elvira Tyre of Fort Collins, CO. ; 30 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, and 16 great-great grandchildren. Eugene Harley Learned, son of George and Mary Learned, was born in Crawford County, Penn. on August, 20, 1853. When he was 8 years old he came with his parents in a covered wagon to Fillmore County, Minnesota. The trip required three months of wearisome travel. After residing there for nine years, the family returned to Penn. On Feb. 4, 1871 he was married to Susan Ilura Hayford. To this union eleven children were born, six sons and five daughters- Orville, Adelaide, Abijah, Eugene, John Irwin, Harry, Susan, Kate, George, Alonzo, Ruth and Irene. In 1879 they returned to Spring Valley, MN. He was associated with the Cargill Elevator Co. for 7 years at Fountain, MN. The family then moved to Waverly in 1888, where he continued his connection with Cargill, Inc., as a wheat buyer for 38 years. His time of service to the Cargill Organization dated back futher than any living veteran when they paid tribute to him on his 94th birthday. During his active years he held various positions of trust. He was appointed Postmaster in 1897, a position he held for several years; he served on the school board and village council and always took an active part in politics. Throughout his 60 years in Waverly he was closely associated with the Presbyterian Church as an officer for many years and as it's caretaker. He was 86 years old when he completed his 13 and one half terms as custodian of the public school. In testimony to his faithful service, the teachers and pupils representing the host of children whose lives he had influenced, visited the church while his body lay in state. E.H. Learned was a member of the Masonic Order for 65 years, and belonged to Howard Lake Lodge 82, A.F. & A.M., most of the time, where he took an active part and served in various offices. Submitter Note: This is an obit for my 2nd Great Grandfather Eugene Learned (1853-1946)
