Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: LaNaye Hennen ARNOLD A. WATTNER (1878) Arnold A. Wattner, retired business man of Canby, has been a resident of that city for more than thirty-five years--almost from the date of its founding. He is one of the few of the earliest residents who still live there. Mr. Wattner was born in Norway November 1, 1839, a son of Tonnes and Christence Wattner. Neither of his parents came to the New World, his mother dying in Norway in 1842 and his father in 1867. Arnold received his education in his native land, in which he lived until twenty-one years of age. The subject of this review came to America in 1860. The first seven years he worked in the pineries of Michigan; then he went to Wisconsin and worked in the pineries of that state. His next home was in Fillmore county, Minnesota, where for two years he worked in a store. Thereafter for some time he worked at different occupations in Fillmore county. In 1878 Mr. Wattner came to Canby and opened a general merchandise store, which he conducted until 1886. Selling out his business, he worked in different lines for a number of years and finally retired from active pursuits. Mr. Wattner was city recorder one term. Mr. Wattner was married at Marshall, Minnesota, November 23, 1878, to Louise Erickson. She is also a native of Norway, having come to America in 1868 and locating in Fillmore county. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Wattner were Martha E. C., Hulda L.T. and Emma S. D. The two last named are deceased. Source: "A History of Yellow Medicine County" by Arthur P. Rose Published 1914
