Westby, who is engaged in the general merchandise business at Burr, is a native of the North Star state, having been born in Fillmore county April 13, 1878. When he was six years of age the family moved to Lincoln county, Minnesota, bought land in Hansonville township, and lived there three years. They then came to Yellow Medicine county and located at Canby, where Adolph C. grew up and attended the public school; later he attended Dixon (Illinois) Normal School and Business College. When a boy Adolph worked at different times in Nelson Brother's lumber yard at Canby, the Nelsons being his half brothers. On April 11, 1900, he was sent to Porter to take charge of the yard at that place, a position he held, with the exception of about eleven months, until Nelson Brothers sold their Porter yard early in 1913. On February 18, 1913, Mr. Westby bought the C. B. Kroger store at Burr. Adolph C. is a son of Christian and Antoinette Westby, natives of the United States and Norway, respectively. Mrs. Westby died at Canby in 1895. There are three children by this marriage: Mary (Mrs. T. C. Wallace), of Porter; Adolph C., of Burr; and Edward, of Porter. Mrs. Westby was twice married, her first husband having been Bernt Nelson. There were four children by that union: Martin S. and Bernt, comprising the firm of Nelson Brothers, of Canby; Anton, who died in 1910; and Thea Nelson Evenson, of Milwaukee. Adolph C. Westby was married in Canby, June 12, 1907, to Josie Jensen, a native of Yellow Medicine county and a daughter of Martin Jensen, one of the pioneers. They have two children, Virgil and Waldemar. Mr. Westby is a member of three secret societies, the Masons, Maccabees and Modern Woodmen. He was village clerk of Porter a half dozen years and was justice of the peace several years.
