Zempel, chairman of the Posen township board of supervisors, is one of the prosperous and influential men of Yellow Medicine county. He is the owner of an excellent half section of land--the northwest quarter of section 36, Sandnes township. Mr. Zempel is a native of Green Lake county, Wisconsin, where he was born August 18, 1862. He is a son of Daniel and Carolina (Ducks) Zempel, both natives of Germany, where they grew up and were married, coming to the United States in early married life. The father died in 1908 in Lac qui Parle county, and the mother died in 1909. When August was two or three years old the family emigrated to Minnesota and located in Waseca county, where the father bought property and engaged in farming. On the Waseca county farm August spent his boyhood days and attended the district schools. He finished his education in the district schools of Blue Earth county, to which place the family moved when August was eighteen years of age. Up to the age of twenty- two years August remained at home; then he started farming for himself, renting a few years and then purchasing a farm. He came to Yellow Medicine county in 1900, bought his present place, and has since been engaged in its operation. He has a nice home, surrounded by a fine grove of trees. He is quite an extensive stock raiser. Mr. Zempel has been a member of the township board of supervisors for the past eight years, having been chairman of the board six years of that time. He is an officer of the Equity Elevator & Produce Company of Wood Lake and belongs to the German Lutheran church of the same village. Mr. Zempel was married November 4, 1887, in Garden City township, Blue Earth county, Minnesota, to Emma Keehn, who was born in Fond du Lac county, Wisconsin, August 3, 1867, a daughter of William and Williamina Keehn. Mr. and Mrs. Zempel have seven children, as follows: William, born February 16, 1889; Clara, born February 28, 1890; Freda, born February 14, 1892; Elsie, born December 5, 1893; Waldemar, born April 1, 1898; Loren, born November 3, 1901; and Matie, born April 22, 1905. All of the children are receiving a good education, several having already graduated from the high school. Source: "A History of Yellow Medicine County" by Arthur P. Rose Published 1914
