ANDERSON (1878) John O. Anderson is a farmer and stock raiser of Sioux Agency township. He is the owner of 120 acres of land on sections 13 and 24. Mr. Anderson has spent his entire life in Sioux Agency township. He was born on the farm on section 13 June 26, 1878, the son of pioneers of the county. He was educated in the district school and until 1901 lived with his parents. Then he bought his present farm, which at the time was without buildings, grove, or other improvements, and he has since been engaged in farming for himself. For three years Mr. Anderson was a director of the school district No. 93, and he is a member of Rock Valley Norwegian Lutheran church. The marriage of Mr. Anderson to Alma Peterson occurred in Sioux Agency township October 3, 1900. Mrs. Anderson is the daughter of Mathias Peterson, of the same township, and she was born in Wisconsin June 19, 1884. Their five children are as follows: Owen, born September 27, 1902; Morris, born March 10, 1904; Irene, born April 6, 1906; Bernice, born August 28, 1909; and Alice, born March 21, 1912. Ole Anderson, the father of the subject of this review, is one of the very oldest pioneers of Yellow Medicine county and still makes his home on the farm he purchased from the government over forty-six years ago, a record of continuous residence on one farm equaled by few, if any, residents of the county. Ole Anderson was born in Norway, March 25, 1828, the son of Andreas and Rachel Anderson. Until thirty-two years of age he lived in his native land, working on farms during the summer months and engaged in deep sea fishing during the winter seasons. He came to America in 1861 and for the next six years lived in Adams county, Wisconsin, working at farm labor and farming for himself. In July, 1867, Ole Anderson, accompanied by a party of Norwegians who located in Yellow Medicine county, drove through with ox teams from Adams county. Mr. Anderson purchased his present farm from the government at that time for $2.00 an acres. The first winter he and his family lived in a sod shanty and then he erected the log house in which he has ever since resided. Ole Anderson has been married twice. His second marriage occurred in Sioux Agency township in 1873, when he wedded Christina Iverson. She was born in Norway, came to the United States when twelve years old, and to Yellow Medicine county in 1867. By his first marriage Mr. Anderson is the father of six children: Andrew of Sioux Agency township; Johanna, of Willmar; Iver, of Sioux Agency; Rachel, of Canada; Tom, of Porter; and Christ, of Sioux Agency. The three children of the second marriage are Tennes, who resides at home; John, a farmer of Sioux Agency; and Julia of North Dakota.
