He was born in Brandenburg Province, Germany, March 14, 1868, a son of John and Augusta (Barker) Schlenner. The father died in Wood Lake township in 1899, and the mother died in 1904. When Gustav Schlenner was one year of age, in 1869, the family came to the United States and located in Dodge county, Wisconsin. After a residence of five years at that point, they moved to Olmsted county, Minnesota, where they lived another five years. The next home was in Murray county, Minnesota, where they engaged in farming five or six years until 1885. During these years Gustav was working on the farm and getting his education, attending the country schools several years and also securing two years of village schooling. In 1885 he came with the family to Yellow Medicine county. The father bought the northeast quarter of section 2, Wood Lake township, the farm that has ever since been the Schlenner home.
