He has lived in many different places and engaged in several occupations, and after spending many years as a rover he settled down in Yellow Medicine county, where he has resided for the past twenty-three years. Carl was born in Braunsberg, Prussia, Germany, May 11, 1850. His parents were farmers in the old country, Christian and Wilhelmina (Helman) Gottschalk by name, both of whom died in the Fatherland. Carl secured a common school education and at the age of fourteen years began working at the harness maker's trade. He worked at that trade and as a painter, decorator and paper hanger during the rest of his life in Germany, which continued until he was thirty years of age. In 1880 Mr. Gottschalk came to the United States. The first year was spent in Newark, New Jersey, and vicinity, working at his trade and as a farm laborer. He crossed the continent then, stopping a while in Chicago, and making his home in Texas one year. Not liking the southern country, Mr. Gottschalk came North and spent one summer working on a farm near Minneapolis. We next find him at Montevideo, where he resided several years, working on a farm three years and in a harness shop several years. Mr. Gottschalk came to Yellow Medicine county in 1890 and bought 120 acres of his present farm on section 26, Omro, which has since been his home. He prospered in his new home and secured other land by purchase. He raises considerable stock and has interests in the Farmers Elevator Company and Farmers Telephone Company of Boyd. He served as a director of his school district several years. Mr. Gottschalk and his family are members of the German Lutheran church, and he has been secretary of the church society nine years. The subject of this review was married in Lac qui Parle county February 23, 1892, to Holda Sommerfeld, who was born in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, April 25, 1870. Her parents, Chris and Henrietta (Krenz) Sommerfeld were born in the Province of Posen, Germany. Mr. and Mrs. Gottschalk have four children: Carl, Lydia, Ella and Richard.
