Hamre, county coroner and furniture dealer of Granite Falls, is a native of Norway but has been a resident of the Granite city nearly thirty-five years. He was born in Norway April 10, 1864, where he passed his young boyhood and secured his early education. At the age of fifteen years, in 1879, he came to the United States, locating at that time in Renville County, just across the Minnesota river from Yellow Medicine county, on land of his uncle, Helge Hamre. There he lived two years and then he moved to Granite Falls and began working in Tasker's hardware store, which at that time was situated the present site of the new Granite Falls Bank building. A little later he clerked in a drug store for a time and then took a position with C.A. Stoppe, with whom he remained two years. Later he took a position with the firm of Sorlien Brothers, with whom he remained five years. Then, in company with O.B. Thorpe, Mr. Hamre started a general store in the corner building now occupied by H. S. Lampman, under the firm name of Thorpe & Hamre. After a business life of about three years, Mr. Hamre sold his interest to his partner, and for two years traveled for the Morse Produce Company. In February, 1898, he bought the F. W. Dodge stock of furniture and undertaking goods, since which time he has been in continuous business in that line. He took a course in the Massachusetts College of Embalming and also attended the State School of Instruction at St. Paul, securing his state license for the conduct of the business. Mr. Hamre is a son of Amund H. and Dorothy C. (Lerohl) Hamre, both natives of Norway who came to the United States in 1881. They located in Renville county, Minnesota, where they now reside, he being eighty-one and she seventy-two years of age. There are seven children -- five boys and two girls-- as follows: Henry A., Christopher, Thomas, Amund, John, Margaret (Mrs. Nicholas Dunn) of Renville county; Christine (Mrs. Andrew Strum), of Seattle, Washington. Mr. Hamre was married in Renville county May 1, 1902, to Anna Marie Knutson. She was born on the farm of her father, Knute Knutson, in that county.
