HALVOR G. HOMME (1883)

Halvor G. Homme is one of the prominent younger business men of Granite
Falls, where he is the proprietor of an exclusive grocery store.

Mr. Homme was born in Grafton, North Dakota, September 12, 1883.  He came
with his parents to Yellow Medicine county when one month old and located 
in Sioux Agency township, where his father bought the historic land on 
which the Indian monument is now located.  Halvor lived on the home place 
until sixteen years of age, when the family moved to Granite Falls.  He 
finished his education, begun in the country schools, with the high school 
course at the Granite city.  He then taught school one year, after which 
he attended the National Business College of Minneapolis two years.  He 
then took a position in a bank at Granite Falls, remaining with that 
institution six months.

In January, 1908, Mr. Homme was appointed by Congressman A. J. Volstead to
the position of assistant clerk in the House, a position he held three
years.  Returning to Granite Falls, Mr. Homme bought a grocery store and 
has since conducted it.  He runs an exclusive grocery, has a fine stock, 
and is making a success of the business.

Mr. Homme has held the office of deputy sheriff, under his father, ever
since his twenty-first birthday.  He is a member of the Knights of Pythias
order and belongs to the fire department and the improvement league.

Halvor G. is a son of G. O. Homme, sheriff of Yellow Medicine county, who 
is now serving his seventh consecutive term.  The father was born in 
Norway and came to the United States when nine years of age.  He was 
married in Minnesota to Sarah Erickson, also a native of Norway, who 
died in 1909, aged fifty years.  After their marriage they went to North 
Dakota and homesteaded.  In 1883 they came to Yellow Medicine county, 
locating in Sioux Agency township, where Mr. Homme secured land, which 
he still owns.  There are twelve children living, as follows:  Gertrude 
(Mrs. Bert Loe) of Granite Falls; Ole, on the old farm; Halvor G., of 
this sketch; Anna (Mrs. Olaf Quasager), of Norway; Knut, of Granite Falls; 
Thora (Mrs. John Fjelstad), missionary to Madagascar; Mary, Peter, Rena, 
Inez, Bessie and Thelma, who live at home.
