BERG (1872) One of Stony Run township's best known and most popular farmers, has borne an important part in the history of Yellow Medicine county during more than forty years of residence. Mr. Berg was born in Norway March 16, 1842. At the age of ten years he came to the United States with his parents, their first location being in Boone County, Illinois. In 1856 they came to Fillmore county, MN, where they made their home for a number of years. In May 1872, Halvor S. Berg left Fillmore county and came to Yellow Medicine county and located on his present farm--the northwest quarter of section 31, Stony Run township--which he took as a homestead. The trip was made by prairie schooner drawn by a yoke of oxen. He build a little board shack, which answered the purpose for a home until 1886, when he erected a good house. In the fall of 1872 Mr. Berg was elected county commissioner, being a member of the second board for Yellow Medicine county. He held the office two years and was then elected to the Legislature, taking part in the session of 1875. In the fall of 1880 he was elected judge of the probate court of Yellow Medicine county, and he held that office until January 1889. Mr. Berg's official life was without blemish, and he retired to private life universally respected. Mr. Bert was married to Thorborg K. Rollefson on March 18, 1872. She is a daughter of Knud and Susanna Rollefson, natives of Norway and early settlers of Yellow Medicine county. They died in Stony Run township--he in 1897 and she in 1891. Mr. and Mrs. Berg have had the following children: Gunhild (wife of Rev. C.K. Solberg), who died March 16, 1911; Susanna C., who lives at home; Annie J. (Mrs. John M. Thomton) of Montevideo; Thea A., who died August 17, 1899; Sigurd A., a physician at Aneta, North Dakota; Knud A., who is farming in Canada; Carl, who died May 21, 1896; Oscar H., who is farming in Canada; Reuben A., who lives at home. Halvor S. Berg is a son of Sigur and Gunhild Berg, both born in Norway, he on January 24, 1820, and she in January 1818. The came to the United States in 1853, spent three years in Boone county, Illinois, and in 1856 moved to Fillmore county, Minnesota, traveling the whole distance with a team of oxen attached to a prairie schooner. Mrs. Berg died in Fillmore county in July, 1874. In later years Mr. Berg moved to North Dakota, where he died April 13, 1911. Source: "A History of Yellow Medicine County" by Arthur P.
