Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: LaNaye Hennen MRS. BERTHA KING (1880) Mrs. Bertha King of Burton township, has lived in Yellow Medicine county since she was fourteen years of age. She owns 240 acres of land in Burton and Wergeland townships, which, with the help of her sons, she farms. The farm is an exceptionally well improved one. During the year 1913 Mrs. King erected a house at a cost of $3000. Mrs. King's maiden name was Bertha Olson, and she was born in Sondreland, Norway, May 5, 1866. Her parents, Michael and Johanna Olson, still live in the old country. At the age of fourteen years, in 1880, she came to make her home with an uncle, Lars Lunderenga, at Canby, with whom she lived until her marriage. Miss Olson was married at Gary, South Dakota, June 2, 1883, to Henry King, who was born in Germany October 26, 1859. He took as a homestead claim eighty acres in Burton, on which he erected a sod shanty, in which he and his wife lived for some time. Their first winter on the homestead they burned hay for fuel and in the early days suffered many inconveniences. Mr. King resided in Burton township until his death June 10, 1902. Since that time Mrs. King and her sons have conducted the farm. The family are members of the Norwegian Lutheran church. Mrs. King has seven sons and two daughters, named as follows: Melvin, born June 2, 1884; Clara, born May 12, 1886; John, born October 8, 1888; Fred, born August 16, 1891; Willie, born November 28, 1893; Carl, born February 12, 1896; Emil, born April 24, 1897; Cathrina, born October 13, 1900; and Clarence, born February 2, 1903.
