McGilvra is editor and publisher of the Clarkfield Advocate, one of the successful news journals of Yellow Medicine County. He has had the management of the paper the past seven years. Mr. McGilvra is a product of Iowa, having been born at Rockwell, Cerro Gordo county, on October 13, 1886. His father, L. E. McGilvra was born in Rockford, Illinois, and died in 1910; his mother Jane A. (Shannon) McGilvra, was born at Nashua, Iowa. When Robert was six years old the family home was made at Larchwood, and in that village he grew to young manhood. He was graduated from the high school there in 1905 and then took a one-term course in the South Dakota University. During his school days young McGilvra had secured some newspaper experience, working in offices to pay his tuition, and upon quitting school he took up that work. In September, 1906, Mr. McGilvra purchased the Clarkfield Advocate, and he has since been its editor and publisher. When he became the owner the paper was at low ebb, brought about by frequent changes in management. By hard work and attention to business, the young editor built up a paying business and has made the Advocate on of the best papers of Yellow Medicine county. It is an independent journal. Mr. McGilvra is a member of the Masonic and Woodmen orders. Source: "A History of Yellow Medicine County" by Arthur P. Rose Published 1914
