Mikkelson is one of the early settlers of Yellow Medicine county. He located at Granite Falls in the fall of 1878 and has made that his home ever since. During this time he has been engaged in several lines of business. Mr. Mikkelson is a native of Minnesota, having been born in Fillmore county February 12, 1858, of Norwegian parentage. His father, Mikkel Mikkelson, was born in Vaas, Norway, in 1815, came to America in 1847, lived in Dane county, Wisconsin, until 1853, and then in Fillmore county, Minnesota, until his death in 1869. The mother of H. A. Mikkelson, Johanna (Olson) Mikkelson, was born and married in Norway and died in Fillmore county in 1872. The boyhood days of H. A. Mikkelson were spent on a farm in his native county. After his mother's death in 1872 he made his home with a sister in Rushford, attending public school during the winter months and working as a farm hand summers. On December 23, 1878, Mr. Mikkelson located in the little village of Granite Falls. The first years he was engaged in various lines of business in partnership with his brother John Mikkelson. Then he sold out and he and a brother and two others purchased the Hickson & Johnson flouring mill, two miles above Granite Falls, and organized the Granite Falls Milling Company. Mr. Mikkelson was interested in the mill five years, and after disposing of his interest he engaged in the real estate and loan business. We next find our subject in the employ of the Deering Harvester Company. He worked as a salesman one year and then became a blockman, having supervision over seven salesman and one expert. He was with the company eight years, including one year after the consolidation into International Harvester Company. The next two years Mr. Mikkelson was in the real estate business, and on August 1, 1908, he became the local manager of the Northwestern Elevator Company, a position he has since held. Mr. Mikkelson has served as a constable of Granite Falls twenty years, still holding the office, and he was deputy sheriff under Sheriff Joseph Fortier four years. Mr. Mikkelson attends the Baptist church and is one of the trustees of the church society. He is a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge. Mr. Mikkelson has been married twice. His first marriage occurred at Rushford, Minnesota, in December, 1878, to Marie Emerson, who was born in Winona county, Minnesota, February 9, 1858, and who died in 1901. Two children were born to them, Oscar and Olga, both deceased. After the death of the children they adopted a little six-months-old girl, Inga Marie. The second marriage of Mr. Mikkelson occurred in Minneapolis on Christmas Eve, 1902, when he wedded Anna B. Foss. She was born in Thime, Norway, November 27, 1868, and came to America in 1881. Mr. and Mrs. Mikkelson have two children, both born in Granite Falls, namely: Vera Albiona, born February 29, 1904; and Homer Angelo, born September 13, 1909 Source: "A History of Yellow Medicine County" by Arthur P.
