Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: LaNaye Hennen NELS J. HANSEN (1905) Nels J. Hansen owns and farms the southeast quarter of section 29, Oshkosh township. He is a native of Denmark and was born October 9, 1859. His parents were Hans N. Hansen and Christina (Krommes) Hansen. At the age of fifteen years Nels became a follower of the sea, and for the next ten years his home was on sailing vessels and steamboats. During this period he visited nearly all the countries of the world, including England, Spain, Turkey, Russia, Africa, the Philippine Islands, China, Japan, South America, Cuba and the United States. In 1884 Mr. Hansen gave up the sea and became a resident of the United States, spending the first few months at New Bedford, Massachusetts. A year was then spent working in the woolen mills in Maine. We next find our subject in Grundy county, Illinois, where he married Nellie Rees, who was born March 7, 1865, in Swansea, South Wales. Her parents were John Rees and Margrett (Davis) Rees, of Swansea, South Wales. Mrs. Hansen died in Grundy county, Illinois, April 10, 1894, leaving one child, Willie Hansen, who is now located west of Canby. In 1905 Nels Hansen located in Yellow Medicine county, rented land several years, and then purchased his present farm in Oshkosh. Mr. Hansen is clerk of school district No. 36. He and his family belong to the German Lutheran Church of Canby. Mr. Hansen has stock in the farmers' elevator companies at Canby and Burr. Mr. Hansen was married in Grundy county, Illinois, October 22, 1896, to Annie Hanson, who was born in the county in which she was married November 7, 1873. Her parents are Andrew B. and Mary (Persnic) Hanson, residents of Oshkosh township and natives, respectively, of Denmark and Germany.
