Schulz who owns the northeast quarter of section 31, Posen township, is a native of Germany. He was born in West Prussia February 24, 1861, and at an early age was left an orphan. His parents were Mike and Annie (Saustrach) Schulz, the mother dying in Germany in 1865 and the father in 1867. After the death of his parents Ferdinand was brought up in the families of his brothers and sisters. He was educated in the German schools and as a boy worked at farm labor. On coming of age in 1882, he came to the United States alone and located in Grant county, South Dakota, and during the next few years he worked out in Grand, Marshall and Deuel counties. In 1886 Mr. Schulz took a homestead in Deuel county, proved up, and lived there until he lost the property. He came to Yellow Medicine county in 1898 and for four years rented a farm in Posen township. Then for another four years he rented a farm in Underwood township, Redwood county, just over the line from Yellow Medicine county and rented a farm on section 30, Posen township, which he conducted four years. In the fall of 1910 he purchased his present farm. He is a member of the German Lutheran church of Posen. Mr. Schulz was married March 22, 1888, in Posen township, to Lena Munch, who was born in Germany. She died November 16, 1909. By a former marriage Mrs. Schulz had one child--Willie Adams. The children of Mr. Schulz are Robert, Albert Leopold, Ferdinand, Ella, Walter, August, Herman, Clara, Otto and Lena. Since coming to Yellow Medicine county Mr. Schulz's farm life has been a prosperous one. He is quite an extensive stock raiser. Source: "A History of Yellow Medicine County" by Arthur P.
