Made available to The USGenWeb Archives by: LaNaye Hennen SEVER H. KVAM (1872) Sever H. Kvam has a fine farm and home on the northwest quarter of section 25, Stony Run township. Mr. Kvam's parents were Henry S. and Ellen Kvam, both born in Norway, he in 1817 and she in 1824, who came to this country in 1869. They located in Freeborn county, Minnesota, where they farmed three years, and then they came to Yellow Medicine County, where they resided to the time of their deaths, that of the father occurring on December 12, 1903, and the mother on March 29, 1904. Sever H. Kvam was born in Norway January 10, 1853, and received his education in that country. There, also was he confirmed in the church. He worked at farming in the old country with his father and came with his parents to America in 1869. The came in a sailing vessel, and the trip took six weeks. He has lived on the present place ever since coming to Yellow Medicine county. He is a member of the United Lutheran church and has held the office of school treasurer six years. Mr. Kvam was married July 14, 1884, to Bertha L. Enstad, a daughter of Lars O. Enstad, who was born in Norway in 1823, and who was an early settler of this county. He died in 1891. Her mother was Anna (Erickson) Enstad, born in Norway in 1827, and died here in 1905. To Mr. and Mrs. Kvam have been born the following children: Ellen, born August 15, 1885; Henry, November 4, 1887; Louis, January 18, 1892; Anna December 3, 1894; Sophie, July 11, 1897; Oliver, April 16, 1900; Melvin, August 9, 1902; Nina, February 2, 1910. All the children live at home. Mr. Kvam has been a resident of Yellow Medicine county since pioneer days. He experienced many of the early day hardships and lost his crops two years by the grasshoppers. He also suffered from fires and blizzards. Source: "A History of Yellow Medicine County" by Arthur P.
