Stevens is one of the old time settlers of Yellow Medicine county, having been a resident of Sandnes township since 1866. Mr. Stevens was born in Norway June 9, 1842. At the age of five years he came to the United States, locating in Wisconsin, where he lived until the outbreak of the Civil War. Answering the call to arms of his adopted country, he joined Company K, First Wisconsin Infantry, and saw three years of service; he was a corporal in his company. He was in the army of the Potomac and had many narrow escapes, bullets passing through his clothing and grazing his head. The subject of this biography came to Yellow Medicine county in 1866 and homesteaded his present home on section 8, Sandnes township. He also has a quarter of section of land on section 5. Mr. Stevens was the first white man married in Yellow Medicine county. On January 10, 1868, he was united in marriage to Helen Glaim, a daughter of Hellek Glaim, another pioneer of Sandnes township. His license was secured at Redwood Falls. George Olds, justice of the peace, performed the marriage ceremony. Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Stevens: Rodina, Clara, Helena and Petrina. Mrs. Stevens died April 9, 1880. Mr. Stevens was married a second time, on March 10, 1885, to Mary Larson, to whom have been given five children: Olai, Louis, James, Mallon, and Julia. Mr. Stevens belongs to the Norwegian Lutheran church of Hanley Falls. Source: "A History of Yellow Medicine County" by Arthur P. Rose Published 1914
