His parents are Nels F. and Maggie (Cope) Swanson, the former a native of Sweden and the latter of Tennessee. The father of our subject was a railroad contractor, and the boyhood days of Fred Swanson were spent with his parents at different places in Iowa. In 1909 he rented land in Webster county and farmed there two years. He came to Yellow Medicine county in 1911 and has since been farming in Swede Prairie township, where he rents 280 acres of land. Mr. Swanson was married in Webster county, Iowa, March 25, 1908, to Birdie Lawson. She was born in the county in which she was married February 26, 1894, and is a daughter of William and Mary (Amex) Lawson, natives of Pennsylvania.
