The brothers carry a stock of general merchandise, consisting of dry goods, groceries, shoes, crockery, glassware, hardware, paints and oils. They have a first-class stock and are doing a prosperous business. Matt Tholkes has spent his entire life in Yellow Medicine county. He was born on his father's farm on section 18, Omro township, February 24, 1888, a son of Peter Tholkes, a native of Germany, and Annie (Lenz) Tholkes, a native of Scott county, Minnesota. Matt received a district school education and lived on the farm until 1907. Then he and his brother engaged in business in St. Leo and Matt has since been in the mercantile business. Sophia Kockelmann, born in Yellow Medicine county May 15, 1888, was married to Mr. Tholkes at St. Leo May 4, 1910. She is a daughter of Barthol and Mary (Maas) Kockelmann, who were early settlers of Omro township. Mr. and Mrs. Tholkes have two children: Regina, born May 25, 1911; and Odelia, born May 20, 1913.
