The mother is of German descent, and was born in Bedford County, VA., in 1822. Our subject was reared on the farm, and received a common school education. He came with his father to Buchanan County, MO., when he was about eleven years of age. He has followed farming and stock raising as his only occupation. In 1874 he wedded Mary Utz, daughter of Henry Utz. Three sons and one daughter have blessed the marriage. Mr. Carpenter has never had advantages of wealth and education and is truly a self-made man.
