Barry County, Missouri Fly or Old Fly Cemetery Corsicana Township ( T24N-R28W-S16 ) Barry County, Missouri Listed and submitted by Jack Fly <JFly161633@aol.com> The "Old Fly Cemetery" is located on the old Fly homestead at the head of Joys Creek. This is the land that Jeremiah Nicholas and Nancy Fly purchased when they first arrived in 1839. There are only the three graves in the cemetery. Jeremiah Nicholas Fly b. 5-Oct-1807 d. 6-Jan-1873 Nancy C. Fly b. 22-Nov-1805 d. 14-Feb-1885 Martin Van Buren Fly b. 17-Mar-1838 d. 26-May-1863 Doctor Martin Van Buren Fly, son of Jeremian and Nancy, was murdered by Bushwackers at his home in Verona, MO. His body was brought home for burial in a wagon pulled by a team of oxen. My son, daughter and I cleaned the cemetery up in Nov when I flew back to Barry County for vacation. I had been there 10 years ago and it was grown up then. We cut brush and trees and reset the stones. There is an iron fence around the graves. Directions from the intersection of B and 37 in Purdy, Mo. take B west 2.1 miles and turn left or south on road 1055. Go south 1.2 miles to the first creek crossing. Cross the second creek and the gate to enter the field is about 100 foot south of the 2nd crossing on the left or east side of the road. From the gate the cemetery is about 200 yds to the center of the field on your right as you enter the gate. See section 16 of this 1909 map where the creek stops south of the church is where you will find the cemetery. The road that use to go east through the S.E. Fly property no longer exists. The one that heads east is 2095. You might want to take a pickup truck as the creek might be up if it's been raining. The man who owns the property lives in the blue/gray home to the north of the creek. You might want to check with him before you enter. © 1999 Susan Tortorelli All Rights Reserved
